What is ROAS?

The short answer
ROAS, or return on ad spend, is ad revenue divided by ad spend: RM1,000 bringing in RM4,000 is 4x. The real test is your break-even ROAS, 1 divided by margin.

The formula with an RM example

ROAS = revenue from ads ÷ ad spend.

A skincare store spends RM2,000 on Meta ads in a month. The ads produce RM9,000 in tracked sales. ROAS is RM9,000 ÷ RM2,000 = 4.5x. Every ringgit spent on ads brought back RM4.50 in revenue.

ROAS vs ROI vs CPL

MetricFormulaAnswers the questionBest for
ROASAd revenue ÷ ad spendHow much revenue did each ad ringgit bring?E-commerce and bookings
ROI(Profit − total cost) ÷ total costDid the whole effort make money?Board-level decisions
CPLAd spend ÷ leadsWhat does one enquiry cost?Lead businesses with offline sales

Lead businesses, such as industrial suppliers or clinics, usually track cost per lead first and then connect leads to closed revenue to calculate ROAS.

Break-even ROAS: the number that matters

Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ profit margin.

If your gross margin is 40%, break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.5x. Below 2.5x you lose money on every sale the ads produce. Above it, the ads are profitable. A business with a 25% margin needs 4x just to break even, so the same 3x ROAS that delights one company quietly bankrupts another.

Work out your break-even number before you judge any campaign. It is the single most useful figure in paid advertising.

Benchmarks by industry

Treat these as typical ranges seen in Malaysian accounts, never as targets. Your margin decides what is good.

Why your ROAS might be lying

Reported ROAS is only as good as your tracking. Common gaps include purchases that the Pixel never sees, WhatsApp sales that never get attributed, duplicate conversions that double the revenue, and platforms that each claim the same sale. Before trusting any number, compare platform revenue with your actual bank or store revenue for the same month. Our analytics and tracking service exists because this gap is so common.

How to raise ROAS: five levers

  1. Fix tracking first, so the algorithm optimises on real purchases.
  2. Raise average order value with bundles, upsells and thresholds for free delivery.
  3. Improve the landing page, because a faster, clearer page converts more of the same traffic.
  4. Cut the audiences and placements that spend without selling.
  5. Test offers before creative, since a stronger offer lifts every ad at once.

Questions people ask

Is ROAS revenue or profit?

Revenue. ROAS divides ad revenue by ad spend and ignores product costs, delivery and staff time. That is why a high ROAS can still lose money, and why break-even ROAS matters more than any benchmark.

What ROAS should a new account target?

Aim to reach break-even within the first two to three months while the account learns, then push toward a profitable target. Judging a new account on week-one ROAS usually kills campaigns that would have worked.

Why did my ROAS drop after iOS updates?

Apple’s privacy changes stopped browser tracking from seeing many purchases, so Meta reports fewer sales than really happened. Adding the Conversions API recovers much of the missing data and usually lifts reported ROAS back toward reality.
